A Morning At Herdsman Lake

Hi All,

Welcome to My Photographic Observations.

Today I am recounting a trip to Herdsman Lake where I went in for some bird photography.
I took my Nikon camera and my Sigma 150-600mm contempory lens. I took my Manfrotto tripod with a Pro Master gimbal head. I got there just after sunrise and I looked for a location where the sun was behind me so the birds would be front lit. I also wanted the easterly wind coming from behind me.
After scouting around I found my spot. I made sure there was no high grasses or shrubs near me as the lake is notorious for having plenty of Tiger snakes.

I looked around and the first photograph is of a Pied Stilt foraging around looking for whatever food it could find in the water.

Something caught its attention as it looked across to see what it was. I got it in this pose which I was quite pleased with.
There were a few species of birds around mainly Pink Eared Ducks, Shell Ducks and Australasian Grebes. I had photographed them before and wasnt to enthusiastic as I couldn't get a clean shot.
Finaly a bird I had never seen before appeared. It wasnt in an exactly great spot as it was amongst the stumpy looking vegetation. Here is the result.

It was a Black Fronted dottrell which is a first time for me.

After many images I thought it was enough but there was a Pink Eared Duck in a bit of a clearing and I decided to make a few more photographs.

I enjoyed my couple of hours at the lake and by this time it was starting to get a bit warm. I put my camera and lens into the bag and carried my tripod back to the car.

Waiting For Sunset

Hi All,

Welcome to My Photographic Observations.

A few weeks ago I was spending some time making photographs of the kiteboarders and windsurfers along the coast at Cottesloe. They are not the subject for this blog but what is the subject was i noticed the way the late afternoon sun was creating lovely light along the landscape.

i put my camera in portrait mode on my tripod and framed the shot with the leading line of the white sand and same time I wanted to capture the clouds in the sky as I liked the formation.
I had tried landscape mode but the scene looked to cluttered and plus I couldn't fit the clouds in the way I wanted.

It seemed to work reasonably well.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Coogee Lake A Place Of Surprise

Hi All,

Welcome to My Photographic Observations.

Wishing everyone A Blessed and wonderfully Happy Easter.

Sometimes you come across a place in your local area that surprises.
Coogee Lake is one such place. I usually go there for bird photography. Although there isnt a huge population of birds, there does seem to be some interesting birds that come from time to time.
I will share some bird photographs in part two of this post.
There are many dead trees in the area and they make for haunting looking images.
After walking around I saw this group of dead trees from a distance and noticed a clean reflection in the water.

It looked really interesting although creepy. I made it black and white as it suited the scene better.

I walked around a little more and saw another scene that I thought looked interesting.
A group of dead trees among the vegetation which I framed and made a photograph.

I think its a fabulous lake although like most lakes there are snakes and I encountered a Dugite crossing the bitumen walkway approx three meter's ahead. I didn't manage any photos as it moved very quickly.

My final image is the little shelter from where I make my bird photographs. I like it as it is situated over the edge of the lake.

Its a great little structure and I can see anything that comes my way.

Thank you for making the time to read.

The Light After A Heavy Shower

Hi All,

Welcome to My Photographic Observations.

Today on my mind is when is the best light. I was at a well known place in Fremantle and thought I would make a time lapse and make a photograph or two.
The place was the Fremantle Monument. It was on top of a hill and it has nice manicured lawns and palm trees around.
It is a War Memorial for soldiers for the main wars and loss of life where Australians participated.

I framed up my composition and adjusted for the light and correctly exposed.
I took a couple of photos and then I proceeded with a time lapse which I will share at some point I think.
Here is the first and main photograph.

The sun broke through the clouds just for a short while and from there when I finished I looked behind me as I knew sunset was coming.

The second photograph I turned around and it looked like some colour in the sky was possible as therthere was a slight break on the horizon.
I quickly set up my shot and framed it so the scene was mainly sky as best I could.

As you can see the two palm trees were nicely positioned with the sun in the middle. The colour was a fiery red which made the clouds spectacular.

Thankyou for taking the time to read My Photographic Observations.

The Ferris Wheel And The Fishing Boat

Hi All,

Welcome to My Photographic Observations.

Today I have a photograph I made one evening at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

The story is I had seen the fishing boat and thought the ferris wheel would be great as a background.
I framed the shot but initialy with my 16-35mm wide angle lens and realized it wouldnt work from my vantage point as the ferris wheel looked to far away.

I swapped that lens with my 28-300mm lens and zoomed in to about 100mm and the compression bought the Ferris wheel closer.
Here is the photograph.

If there is one thing I will do different is next time make the photograph at the blue hour as the sky is too black. The thought is there and so will look into it.
Having said that it might be a while as we have to self isolate.
I wish everyone well in this time of covid-19.

Thankyou for taking the time to read.
